Do I Have the Right Compression Fitting for My Water Filter?

Asked By CopperCrafter88 On

I'm trying to install a water filter that requires a 3/4" compression fitting onto my 3/4" copper pipe. I found this adapter fitting at Home Depot, and I want to make sure I understand how to use it correctly. After applying the compression fitting to the pipe, will it spin independently from the copper? I can't really rotate my water filter, so I'm concerned about that. Also, should I use Teflon tape on the metal threads that go into the plastic body of the water filter?

For your other questions, install the pipe thread first, and then attach the compression fitting. It's important to use Teflon tape or paste on the portion of the threads going into the filter, but do not apply any to the compression side. This will help ensure a good seal without any leaks!

You're close, but remember that compression fittings use tubing sizes instead of pipe sizes. For your setup, you actually need a 7/8" compression fitting to connect to a 3/4" pipe thread. Just so you know, tubing is typically the more flexible material, while pipe is more rigid and defined by its outer diameter. You might find the proper fitting option challenging at Home Depot, though!

Could you clarify the difference between tubing and pipe? Is tubing just the flexible stuff? Also, if I need a 7/8 compression fitting, could I use something like this (link)? I can't seem to find a fitting that matches that at Home Depot.

Yeah, tubing is usually the more flexible type. And yes, you're looking for a 3/4" fitting on the other side if you're connecting to a 3/4" pipe. You might want to check online or ask if they can order it for you!
