Hey SolarDIY Community! I've got a 10-acre plot in Texas where I'm planning to set up an off-grid solar array to power my home and outbuildings. I'm wondering if I need to install a fence around the solar panels. I've read that under Texas Property Code Section 202.010, HOAs might require solar installations to be within a fenced area. Has anyone here managed to install ground-mounted solar panels without fencing? If so, did you encounter any HOA restrictions or complications? If I do need a fence, what types are best to meet regulations? Plus, if anyone has tips on what else to consider for off-grid systems or dealing with HOAs without fences, I'd love your insights. Thanks for your help!

Hey! If you're in an HOA, you'll likely need to run everything by them first, especially since you're setting up ground-mounted panels. Even if the deed restrictions don’t specifically mention solar, HOAs can be picky. It might help to check with your architectural committee on their requirements. Good luck!
In some states, fences are a precaution to prevent liability, like if someone gets hurt near the panels. Also, it keeps animals away from chewing on wires, which can be a real issue. So, even if it’s not a strict requirement, consider how you want to handle that potential risk. It might be worth it to install some fencing just for your peace of mind!
While I haven’t faced any strict requirements myself, having a fence can definitely help alleviate concerns from neighbors or HOA. I’d suggest going for something not too obtrusive but still offers protection. Also, if you're off-grid, make sure to ask about any permits specific to that setup, as they can have different rules than grid-tied systems!

Thanks! I will definitely reach out to them for clarification.
