Hey everyone! I'm diving into intermediate woodworking projects using some pricey lumber like walnut and I'm a bit confused about what tools I should get. I know what a jointer and a planer do, but I'm not sure how the lumber will come. I'm planning to buy some 6/4 s2s walnut and I'm going to edge joint it using a table saw jig. Will the boards be the same thickness or will I need to plane them for my panel glue-up? And will they be flat or will I need to face joint and plane? What's the lumber yard's process for turning rough lumber into s2s lumber? Any insights would be super helpful!

Honestly, I’d skip the jointer. If you're working with raw lumber, you're going to struggle to get good edges even after jointing. Plus, you'll end up with an S3S rather than S4S. Trust me, there are easier ways to join edges than through a jointer. Just remember, planning isn't something you can easily substitute for a jointer!

That totally makes sense! But I’m still trying to wrap my head around how to face joint without one.
