Do I Need a Landscape Architect or Just a Good Landscaping Company?

I'm looking to create a privacy line along my fence that runs about 100-150 feet long, with a height goal of 20-30 feet. I have 10-20 feet of width to work with, but the narrowest spot is about 8 feet. I'd like to use evergreens and have some flowering bushes like Rhododendron in the front or bottom layer. I'm uncertain about the next steps and whether I should hire a landscape architect or if a reputable landscaping company would suffice. What do you think?

If you're just planning a long garden, hiring a designer could be enough. Just be cautious about them creating a giant monoculture since that can lead to diseases ruining your hedge. Mixing plants might be the way to go!

For richer designs and better plant selections, going with a qualified landscape designer is the way to go. A landscape architect might be overdoing it for your project, but a designer can help you achieve what you want. I've got over 20 years of experience, so feel free to ask if you're curious about the design process!

Drive to a few local nurseries and share your plans. They can recommend plants and might even have trusted installers. It's a good way to bring variety and get expert opinions. Bring a notebook to jot down notes!

If you consider a landscaping company, check their references and arrange site visits to see their work. Ask if their past clients are satisfied with the results. Happy clients can be a great sign! Just keep in mind that expecting customers to show off their yards is a bit steep for reputable companies to ask.

True, reputable companies shouldn’t put that burden on clients. Look for transparency and satisfaction before making a choice!
