I have an older home and I usually handle repairs myself, but I haven't done much with roofing. The area where the asphalt shingles meet the brick wall has some tar that needs replacing. My plan is to scrape off the old tar and just apply new stuff over it. Am I overlooking any important details or complications? Just to clarify, it's not a chimney; it's the side of the brick house. I’d recommend hiring a pro for this! Tar might wear out sooner than you'd like, while metal or lead flashing will provide a much better long-term seal.
Before you dive into flashing, make sure you get some tuck pointing done on that brick. That’ll help ensure everything is sealed properly. Got a masonry guy coming soon, so that’s good!
Honestly, relying on just tar isn’t a great idea. It’s more of a temporary fix. You really should use the right step flashing and counter flashing into the mortar joints for a permanent solution. And don’t forget that some of those mortar joints might need some repair too.
