Do I Need Backer Board Before Tiling on Self-Leveling Concrete?

I'm in the process of redoing my bathroom, and I've noticed that the plywood subfloor isn't level. My plan is to lay down some self-leveling concrete to fix that before installing tile. My question is, can I simply lay the tile directly on the self-leveler, or should I put down backer board first?

Definitely put down cement board before the self-leveling concrete. This helps prevent flexing, which can cause issues later on when you lay down the tile.

For sure, you’ll want to use an uncoupling membrane as well. It acts as a buffer to prevent cracking between the tile and the substrate.

What are the chances of cracking if I skip the uncoupling membrane?
