Do I Need Sand Between My Pavers If I’m Using Base Mats?

I'm planning to install a 12x19 patio before our first little one arrives, and I've been researching the best methods for laying pavers. I saw some base mats at Home Depot that are supposed to simplify the process instead of using sand. My question is: if I use these base mats, do I still need sand between the pavers? I'm planning on using standard 12x12 pavers without any gaps for drainage.

I used those paver base panels on a patio similar to yours. If you skip the sand between the pavers, you'll likely feel them shift when you walk on them. The sand or polymeric sand helps set them in place and minimizes movement, giving you a more solid feel underfoot.

From my experience laying paver patios, you'll want to make sure your base is even first. I usually use compacted soil, followed by fine gravel, and then a one-inch layer of clean sand. This sand helps with adjusting the height and alignment of the pavers. If you're asking about sand between the pavers as well, yes! After setting them all down, you should use special locking sand to fill in those tiny gaps. This is crucial as it locks the pavers together and prevents weeds from growing up between them.

Thanks for clarifying! I couldn't remember the locking sand step.

I procrastinated on that for ages, and now I have a weed jungle to contend with. Don't skip the locking sand!

You can definitely use those base mats! They’re a great way to save time and effort, though they can cost a bit more. Just make sure the area underneath is level; you might need a drainage layer based on your soil. As for filling the gaps, if they're tight, go with sand. If they're wider, you could use some crushed rock or even throw in some glow-in-the-dark stones if you're feeling fancy!
