I'm looking to replace the front and back doors of my house in northern Minnesota, which I just bought in October 2024. I'm wondering if I should remove the storm doors I currently have or should I go ahead and put them back on? Are they really necessary, given the weather here?

I’m going through the same thing! We just got new storm doors installed and it’s made a world of difference. They really help with insulation, block outside noises, and I love that I can open the main door and let light in without worrying about bugs or the weather. Plus, they give us one more layer of defense against my cat when she decides to zoom around! If you’re in a place with harsh winters, I’d say keep them or get new ones for sure!
I totally get the struggle with storm doors. I've got steel doors and I remember the paperwork warning that a storm door could mess with the warranty due to overheating on sunny sides. That said, I recently installed a storm door and it’s been fantastic! I love that it has a pull-down window and screen so I can control how much air I let in without my pups getting to the screen. The light and airflow improvements are also amazing, so I’d recommend considering it!
Having storm doors here in northern Minnesota is definitely a plus! They help with insulation which is key for keeping your home warm during those cold winters. They also protect your main doors from the elements, which can save you on repairs in the long run. I’d definitely recommend reinstalling them for added energy efficiency and protection against that harsh weather!
While storm doors aren’t strictly necessary, they can really be a game changer! In my own experience, they let in extra light if your room lacks it, making it feel more open and inviting. Plus, having a retractable screen is super handy for letting in fresh air when the weather's nice. They do provide some insulation and protect your main door from the elements. Just a heads up, in heavy snow, you might have to shovel to access the door since they can get blocked, but usually, it’s not a big hassle for me.
