I've been researching a bit and came across different opinions. One source mentioned that it's only necessary to have the top 6-8 inches of the bed filled with Mel's Mix. Is this really the case? I'm thinking about putting a layer of topsoil beneath that, but I'm a bit worried about whether that would be a good idea or not.

Yeah, that's actually a good approach! Just keep in mind that Mel’s Mix tends to shrink as time goes on, so you'll need to replenish it with compost every now and then. Good luck with your garden!
I’ve done something similar by adding sticks and leaves under my Mel’s Mix, and it worked really well. You might want to look into 'hugelkultur' as a method if you haven't already!
Thanks for the tip! I’ll check that out ?
Same here, I found that method super effective!

Thanks a lot! ?
