Do I Need to Finish My Pantry Wooden Shelves?

Hey DIY enthusiasts! I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen pantry and I've installed some raw wood panels I picked up from Home Depot. I'm wondering if I need to do any finishing treatments like lacquer, stain, or sanding. I really love the raw look and color of the wood, but I'm a bit concerned about mold. The wood was slightly damp, but I wiped it down with white vinegar, and now it seems dry. Any advice on what steps I should take to protect it without losing that natural aesthetic? Thanks!

I totally get the raw look! You can leave the wood as it is if you like that style. Some people choose to apply a couple of coats of white primer or go for a stain, while others prefer polyurethane for a more finished feel. But if the raw finish speaks to you, it’s okay to keep it bare!

Thanks! So it won't get mold by leaving it like that? That's honestly the main reason I'd do anything extra.

I have to ask, how was the wood wet? Did it have moisture from being stored? It’s important to make sure it’s completely dry before using.

Maybe damp is a better word? It was from the store, but after the vinegar treatment, it dried out.

Just a heads up, stay away from oil-based finishes for indoor projects like this. They can take a long time to off-gas, which is not good for your health.

Thanks! I’m not too sure what all that means, but it sounds important. I think I’ll just keep the shelves as they are!
