I'm planning to repaint my ceiling, which currently has a flat paint finish. It's just a standard refresh, but I'm wondering if I need to prime it first, or if sanding will be sufficient. Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks!

You probably don't need to prime it unless there are a lot of stains. Typically, ceilings don’t take much wear and tear, so a good coat of paint should do the trick without priming. Just make sure your old paint isn't in terrible condition!
Usually, you can skip priming if the ceiling is in decent shape. But, if your ceiling gets plenty of sunlight or if it hasn't been primed in a while, might be worth considering. Old paint can soak up new paint like a sponge, leading to an uneven finish. In those cases, I’d recommend using an oil-based primer to ensure your fresh coat stays nice and even.

Thanks for the detailed explanation! If I decide to prime, do you have any primer suggestions, maybe something from Home Depot?
