I recently purchased a townhouse in 2022 that already had a finished basement with framing, insulation, and plumbing roughed in by the builder. I got an electrician to add some recessed lighting and outlets, plus a plumber to connect the existing plumbing and install a shower and toilet. The plumber assured me that permits weren't necessary since the plumbing was already in place. I've done the drywall and painted the basement myself, and I'm really happy with how it turned out using better materials than the builder provided. However, I'm now concerned about the fact that I didn't check with the county about needing permits for this work, especially since I do want to sell this home in the future. I'm anxious that this could create issues later. I took some photos during the renovations, but what should I do now?

I'd recommend playing it close to the chest. Calling the permit office now could lead to more stress than it's worth. You did what you thought was best, so maybe just focus on the fact that your basement is improved and looks great. Plus, many people buy homes with unpermitted work all the time and still sell without issues.
Honestly, it seems like you're worrying more than necessary. Since the basement was already finished when you bought it, most inspections when you sell will likely look at it as a finished space. They won’t compare new inspections to the old one; it’s a fresh slate. Just keep quiet about any changes you made. You’re selling a finished basement, and that’s what matters in the end!
If you're planning to use that basement space as a bedroom, make sure you’re aware of egress requirements! Those are super important for safety. If you’re just using it as a theater room, then you should be okay. Just remember to disclose any work done without permits if required by your state when you sell.
