Do I really need a 1 micron filter for my dust collector if I’m using a P100 respirator?

I recently upgraded to a used dust collector from my shop vac and I'm debating whether I should invest in a 1 micron filter canister. It's pretty pricey, and I usually wear a P100 respirator while working. Is the filter necessary or can I rely on just the mask?

I set mine up to exhaust the fine dust outside and use a cyclone to manage the chips. This way, I find I'm clearing out the fine particles much quicker than relying on a HEPA filter. Just be careful with dust management; it can really linger in your shop if you let it build up!

That's interesting, exhausting outside. I found it tough in the winter though. Any tips for managing dust when it’s too cold to open the garage? Maybe I should consider a dedicated exhaust opening.

If your mask is fitted correctly and you're clean-shaven, you should be okay with just the P100. Just make sure to keep it on for a while after you stop working to avoid inhaling particles that linger in the air. But remember, having that canister will definitely make your workspace cleaner and reduce the overall dust—it’s a great investment for your lungs!

Thank you for the advice!

Honestly, I wouldn't just rely on the P100 respirator alone. The most dangerous particles are between 0.3 and 1 micron, so a 1 micron filter might not even catch them all. Plus, having proper ventilation and maybe even an ambient air filter can really help keep your workspace cleaner.

I've gone with a 1 micron filter canister plus respirator. Thanks for your input.
