Do I Really Need a Bandsaw for Carving?

Hey everyone! I'm getting back into carving after a long break of 15 years, and I'm struggling a bit with maintaining the templates that I freehand draw. Without a bandsaw to shape them at the start, I'm curious if I really need one for this process? What alternative methods can I use to achieve the initial shape I need? Also, I'm looking to carve some dachshunds for a friend, so if anyone has some good templates for that, I'd love to see them!

I usually go with a small Japanese pull saw for my projects. It's really handy and gives good control. You could also try using chisels and gouges; they can help refine your shapes quite well!

You might not need a bandsaw at all! You can often find cheap ones on places like Facebook Marketplace for about $25 to $50, or even at pawn shops for around the same price. But if you're looking for alternatives, a coping saw is a great option. If you don’t mind using power tools, consider the 561 multipurpose rotary bit for the initial shaping. There's a cool demo of it being used for carving a bear, which you can check out!

A coping saw is definitely an option. It’s great for detailed work and allows for some flexibility! Plus, chisels and gouges can help get the finer details once you've got the rough shape down. It just depends on how intricate you want to get with your carvings.
