Do I Really Need Tempered Glass for a Low Traffic Interior Transom Window?

I'm considering using regular glass for a transom window that's non-loadbearing and has very little foot traffic. The window measures 17 x 48 inches and I'm wondering if I really need to spend extra on tempered glass. Are there any safety concerns or requirements I should be aware of?

It's really about safety here. If regular glass breaks, you could end up with dangerous shards everywhere, which is a hassle to clean. On the other hand, tempered glass shatters into small, safe pieces. Just keep in mind if anyone's nearby when it breaks, it could become a nasty situation. So it's ultimately your choice!

Have you considered how many glass items are in a typical home? Think about mirrors and cabinet doors; they can break too. I wouldn’t hesitate to use tempered glass even if it’s just inside.
