Do I Really Need to Replace Soil in My Containers Every Year?

I have a bunch of small pots and containers on my deck for gardening, and I'm about to plant some seeds. My first thought is to just break up the old soil with a trowel and add some fertilizer, but I'm wondering if I need to completely replace the soil instead. It seems like that could be a hassle and create a lot of waste. What's the best approach to rejuvenate my container soil?

Every other year is a solid plan! You can remove about half of the old soil and mix in some compost, especially if you’re planting heavy feeders like tomatoes and peppers. This keeps nutrients balanced without the heavy work of a complete soil change.

Honestly, I’d just add some compost to your existing soil. Some seasons, I’ve even added just topsoil, and that has worked perfectly fine too. No need to stress about a total soil overhaul!

You definitely don’t need to replace all your soil every season. Just mix in some compost, and it should be good to go! It's an easy way to refresh your pots without all the hassle of starting from scratch.
