Do Scarecrows Really Work for Keeping Birds and Other Pests Away?

I'm starting my first garden and I'm curious if scarecrows actually help keep birds away from plants. I've heard mixed things about their effectiveness. Also, we have a ton of rabbits in our area – any suggestions on how to prevent them and other critters from munching on my garden?

Scarecrows might not be the best option. I've tried some tricks like hanging CDs and setting up a small owl statue, but the birds here seem way too clever for that! What worked for me against rabbits was putting up some chicken wire fencing. You don’t need it to be super tall; just around two feet high did the trick. Sure, they say rabbits can jump, but I haven't seen any try to get over it since I set it up.
