Hey everyone! I'm looking to switch out the five light fixtures in my kitchen for some smart Philips Hue recessed lights, specifically this model: [Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Downlight](https://www.philips-hue.com/en-us/p/hue-white-and-color-ambiance-downlight-4-inch/046677578411). I reached out to a company about the installation, and they mentioned that these LED lights don't require a can, but there might be some patching and painting of the ceiling if wiring needs to be installed. Here's where I'm a bit confused: I thought that according to the specs, these lights do need a can as they say they fit standard 4 inch cans. Also, I believe any ceiling patching would be necessary since the existing holes are 3 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep, meaning they might need resizing. Am I misunderstanding the whole situation?

The light you mentioned seems to be a retrofit model intended for existing 4-inch cans. If you're installing new lights rather than replacing, look for pancake-style lights that don’t rely on existing cans. They're generally easier for new installations... like their 6-inch canless lights. They could save you some hassle!

But what if we want to replace the existing sockets with cans? Could that be complex, or do you think just enlarging the holes would be enough?
