Do You Keep a Gardening Journal? What Do You Write In It?

I'm super excited because this is my first full year with a polytunnel! I've sown tons of seeds and have a lot of ideas for the upcoming months. I think it would be great to keep a gardening journal to track everything, but I get writer's block every time I try to start. I'm curious—what do you typically record in your gardening journals? Do you follow a specific format? Also, I'd love to see some pictures of your journals if you have them!

I got a 5-year gardening journal for Christmas, and I’m into my third year now. It’s been a lifesaver for tracking the best sowing times since I often found the packets and guidelines were too early for my zone. I definitely recommend keeping a record; it really personalizes your gardening experience and helps you learn from any mistakes!

I keep mine pretty straightforward—just to-do lists that I tick off, what I’ve planted or harvested, and any design ideas I have. I love being able to look back at what was done last year and learn what worked and what didn’t. It’s also fun to see how much I’ve accomplished! Plus, I have a photo album where I organize plant labels from the garden center; it’s a great visual way to keep track of what I have.

For sure! I suggest jotting down the dates you sow seeds. Later in the year, note how each batch turned out—if they thrived or flopped. It really helps to look back next year and adjust your planting schedule based on what worked or didn’t work. For example, I sowed fennel twice last year; one batch was awesome, and the other got planted too late in the season. This year, I’ll make sure to start the later batch earlier!
