Does a Stabilizer Affect an Extension Ladder’s Weight Limit?

I'm considering getting a Werner 24' aluminum extension ladder for tasks like gutter cleaning and pressure washing. I currently use a Little Giant but want something better suited for my needs. I'm leaning towards a type 2 ladder rated for 225 lbs since it's the lightest option. I weigh 190 lbs and usually don't exceed 200 lbs. My question is, does a stabilizer add to the 225 lb limit? I usually don't carry heavy loads, but I worry I might push the limit sometimes.

Just a heads-up: Werner had a recall on some of their ladders. Make sure you avoid that model number linked in the recall notice.

Thanks for the warning! That model looks too similar to my Little Giant anyway, so I'm steering clear.

I doubt it counts against the weight limit. There’s usually a big safety margin built into these ratings. I once saw a 350 lb guy on a pretty sketchy ladder, and he was fine.

Thanks! That makes sense. I guess we'd have bigger issues if ladders failed as soon as they hit their max weight!

In my opinion, the stabilizer doesn’t add to the weight limit. It just extends the point of contact. Most of them are pretty light. Just be careful as it can make the ladder top-heavy when extended. Make sure it's installed correctly to avoid hazards.

Appreciate the tips! I've had some close calls with my Little Giant due to weight balance, so I'm glad to be upgrading.
