Does Grass Height Affect Stress from Equipment Use?

I'm curious about how grass height impacts the stress it experiences when heavy equipment like a Bobcat mini loader and mini excavator are driven over it, especially if mats or boards are used underneath. Does keeping the grass taller help reduce stress, or does it not really make a difference?

Using a thick layer of wood chips can really help minimize compaction problems, which is what you want to avoid. Another option is to use special low-pressure equipment to lessen the impact on the grass.

It's best to keep the grass at the right height for its specific species. If it’s cut too short, it stresses out, no matter what. If it’s too long, it might get flattened when equipment rolls over it and won’t bounce back as quickly. Finding that sweet spot is key!

Thanks for the tip! I'll cut it to my regular height today.

Absolutely! Just be sure not to operate heavy machinery on wet soil, as this compacts the soil too much. Using lighter equipment can help, and if you're mowing frequently, try not to follow the same path each time to prevent rutting. Also, using perforated lawn mats can be beneficial, but make sure to move them around regularly.

A few strategies can really help. You could lay down hay and then put plywood on top. This will compress the grass, but as long as it’s not for too long, it should recover. Just keep in mind if this is a long-term job, you might need to do some turf repairs since the grass won’t be getting sunlight.
