Does Painting Pressure Treated Lumber Help Prevent Rot?

I'm planning to install some 4x4 pressure treated lumber for a trellis and a living fence for my grapevines. These posts are rated for ground contact, but I won't be using cement—just drainage rock and dirt for backfilling. My question is, will painting the ends of the 4x4s that go underground help protect them from mold and rot?

I've noticed some folks use metal post supports to keep the wood out of direct ground contact. They can be a great option if you're looking for additional protection. For example, you can find options that accommodate various post sizes, including 4x4. Just check out sites like Lowe's for options!

Yes, painting the ends can definitely help reduce moisture exposure, which in turn can minimize the risk of mold and rot. Just make sure that the hole drains well too! Keep in mind that the longevity of your posts will really depend on factors like the type of wood, local weather conditions, and regular maintenance.
