Does Sanding Wood with Low Grit Sandpaper Help Glue Sticks Better?

I'm curious if lightly sanding two surfaces that will be glued together with 40-80 grit sandpaper will improve glue adhesion. My thinking is that rougher surfaces provide more area for the glue to grip, but I'd love to get some input on this. Additionally, should I worry about wood dust being left behind affecting the bond? Is there a right way to incorporate sawdust into a joint?

Sanding does help because it increases the surface area, but don't forget about the grain direction—it matters for the bond strength too. If the grains are going in different directions, that could impact how well it sticks.

I hear you! If I sand perpendicularly to the grain on one surface, do you think that’ll still make a difference?
