I recently bought a house and found some questionable work done on the entrance staircase. The contractor charged around 4k CAD for resurfacing in January, and it looks like the surfacing didn't stick at all. I took over the house in August, and during the winter, I mistakenly applied some salt, not knowing it wasn't a good idea. Now, the contractor offered to fix it for 1k, which seems low considering the original work. Am I right to think they did a poor job and are trying to dodge full responsibility?

Before you get too stressed, it might help to know exactly how much salt you used and whether you have any before pictures. Just a couple of cups might not be too bad, but if it shows quick wear post-winter with photos to back it, you could have a case! Definitely keep those documents handy and consider your next steps.
From what I'm gathering, you probably shouldn't have to pay anything since you weren't the owner when they did the work, but that should have been noted in the sale. I'd recommend checking your documents or having a chat with your realtor about this. Honestly, you might want to steer clear of letting them do more work if you're already doubtful about their quality.
