Finding Hardwood in Germany for Woodworking

Hey everyone! I have a buddy from my military days who's visiting me in the US for a couple of weeks. We're planning to hang out in my woodworking shop, but he's been complaining about how hard it is to find good hardwood in Germany that's not super expensive. He's looking to build some tables, so I figured he'd need a reliable source for 8/4 wood. It would be awesome if anyone knows of any places, especially around the Ramstein/KMC area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

You should have plenty of options in Germany, particularly near the Ardennes. Some common types of wood like oak, birch, beech, ash, elm, and maple should be fairly easy to find. Just remember that there’s a distinction between lumberyards that cater to the timber industry versus those focused on interior projects. Knowing the right terms in German would also be super helpful!

Could you clarify what those terms are?

Honestly, wood prices have skyrocketed lately, and finding quality stuff can be a real pain. Even if you do find it, they often charge a fortune for it!

It really depends on your specific location, but check out the extensive list of lumber yards maintained by Holzwerken. They have a solid directory that should help you find what you need! You can find it here: https://www.holzwerken.net/finder/.
