Finding Router Bits Smaller than Shank Diameter?

Asked By CraftyNinja42 On

Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie when it comes to routers and I've been exploring options to expand my woodworking projects. I'm considering buying a palm router that accepts both 6mm and 1/4" bits. However, I've encountered a bit of a challenge while searching for router bits that have a cutting diameter smaller than the shank diameter. Are such bits available, or am I not looking in the right places? For instance, I want to cut a narrow groove around the edges of a box to create a recess for the bottom, but for smaller boxes made from 6mm thick material, I feel it might be overkill. Are there alternative methods to achieve this? Also, I'd love recommendations for bits or brands that are available in the EU, or even from Chinese stores, at a reasonable price since I'm just getting started with this. If possible, I prefer metric measurements over imperial ones. Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Sure, they can be found, but they're quite finicky. I use a 1/8" bit (which is approximately 3.175mm), but I have to take my time with shallow passes to avoid breaking them. If you’re doing a groove for the entire length, a table saw could be a better option since its blade kerf is about 1/8"—some are actually 3/32". If you’re comfortable, sharing a pic or sketch of what you’re aiming for might help us give more tailored advice!

Just a heads-up, 1/8" actually equals 3.175mm, not what you mentioned earlier. Just trying to help clear that up!

Absolutely! Router bits with a smaller cutting diameter than the shank do exist. For brands, I recommend checking out CMT and Freud for options in the EU. For your grooving needs, both straight cut and spiral bits could work well. You might also want to look at Proxxon and Festool, as they have small diameter cutters available. Trend may have a distributor in the EU too, so that could be worth checking out.

Yes, bits with smaller cutting diameters do exist! I have a 1/8" straight cut bit in my kit, which should suit your needs. You might want to look into CNC bits as they can offer what you're looking for. Just be careful, as smaller bits can be a bit fragile. If you have access to a table saw, you could also make kerf cuts for grooves, which might work better for your project.
