Flipped House Nightmare: Our Cast Iron Tub is Peeling and Everything’s Falling Apart!

My husband and I are first-time homebuyers and were thrilled to find a flipped house in our budget. We moved in six months ago, and now it feels like everything is falling apart. Initially, the walkthrough showed a beautifully renovated home, but now we're seeing major issues. The cast iron tub is peeling badly, and I'm worried about its condition under the paint. Should we replace it or try refinishing it? Also, the paint on the ceiling outside the bathroom door is peeling off. We've encountered several plumbing and sewer problems too! The house was empty for a while before being flipped, so we've run into all sorts of problems since moving in. Any advice on how to tackle these issues would be greatly appreciated!

It's a common issue with flipped houses; they often just cover up problems instead of fixing them properly. Your peeling tub is likely a result of bad prep before painting. Some flippers just slap on a fresh coat without adequately preparing the surface. I recommend refinishing the tub, but ensure they do a proper acid etching first—that's crucial for good adhesion! And don't stress too much about the ceiling paint right away, tackle one issue at a time. Good luck!

Totally agree! I had a similar experience, and prepping was key. It's worth investing the time to do it right.

Don't forget that you can get a pro to inspect the whole house; it might save you from more headaches down the line.

As a contractor with over 30 years of experience, I can tell you that your tub needs some serious attention. If not prepped correctly, any new coat won't hold and will start peeling again. You should first look for water stains on the ceiling, it could be a sign of leaks. I strongly suggest getting a full inspection done, even if it isn't legally necessary. It'll give you clarity on what else might be wrong.

Can you do the etching by hand, or is that a no-go for best results?

Definitely get that inspection! It can prevent a lot of future issues and costs.
