I just moved into a new house and I'm getting used to using a gas stove and oven. I have a couple of questions and I'm hoping someone can help me figure out if I should call the gas company or if what I'm experiencing is normal.
After I first use the range or the oven, there's a faint smell of gas. It fades quickly, but is that typical?
Also, I've noticed that our stairwell next to the kitchen has a gas smell after using the stove, but that too goes away eventually. Is this possibly from a leak, or is it just unburnt gas lingering in the stairwell?
Thanks for any advice!

It's pretty normal to smell a little gas when you start up your stove or oven, especially since they add a strong odor to natural gas to warn us of leaks. It’s common for gas stoves, particularly with certain ignition systems, to smell a bit as the gas builds up before lighting. If your flame ignites in just a few seconds, you’re likely okay. That said, stairwells can trap smells, so it can exaggerate it up there. But if you're concerned, definitely consider calling the gas company just for peace of mind!

That makes sense! I’ve also noticed that the smell fades pretty quickly upstairs, so I’m hopeful it’s not a leak. Just wondering if it's worth calling them out anyway?
