Getting Ingrown Hair-Like Bumps After Sanding Wood – Is This Normal?

I've been sanding a friend's dock railing, and I started noticing what seem to be ingrown hairs popping up. I tried to pop one, and it started bleeding right away. I've got one on my cheek, another near my mustache, and just found a new bump on my thigh. This is the only new thing I've done recently, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. Is this a common issue? Thanks in advance for any insight!

What type of wood are you sanding? I tend to have issues like this with cedar because of the oils in it; it can trigger a skin allergy for some people.

Thanks for your input! I'm using Mahogany. I've also noticed red eyelids and a similar bump below my eyelid. Sounds like it might be an allergy, huh?

Oh wow, that looks similar to what I experienced on my face before. I had a photo of it where you could see the hairs sticking out. Never had anything like that happen before!

Do you use insect repellent? There might be a local bug that’s causing some irritation. I've had something similar happen without even woodworking, just felt like something got into my skin. And where you’re located by the ocean, it could definitely be an allergy. Maybe try some skin repellent next time?

I don’t think it’s bugs for me since I’ve been working during the day. The bumps are near my eyelid now, and my eyelids are red too. Definitely leaning towards an allergic reaction here.

Could it be heat blisters? Sometimes working outdoors and sweating can cause skin irritations that mimic ingrown hairs.
