I'm considering setting up a small solar generation system to help with unexpected power outages. The solar tech available these days has really grown since I first got a portable panel for charging my phone while camping. I'm not ready to install a large roof array, but I'd love some guidance on how to start small. I'm looking for solutions that I can set up in my yard or shed, ideally to charge a portable power supply to keep devices charged or run a sump pump if needed. I'm located in a big city in Ontario, Canada.

I've had good luck with Renogy and Victron products. They both offer kits that are pretty user-friendly. You’ll want to think about what you need to power. For example, I have a small system that keeps a 24V battery bank charged, using just some panels and an MPPT controller. I went with Renogy's 400W array kit, and it works great for me.
I recently got a solar generator, the Anker Solix C1000. It's great because it has 120VAC outlets, but you should check how much power your sump pump uses. You might find that the roughly 1kWh capacity of the C1000 isn't enough, especially if the pump runs often. You could also consider a device like the Kill A Watt to monitor your electricity usage and help figure out your needs. Also, investing in durable solar panels can save you money in the long run!

Thanks! The sump pump isn't used too often except during heavy rain, but it's crucial for keeping our basement dry. Do you know of any good resources for beginners on solar systems and things to think about?
