Getting Started with Gardening in a Small Urban Space

Hey everyone! I'm super excited to dive into gardening, but I'm a bit worried about my setup since I live in Philadelphia and my backyard is mostly concrete. I'm really passionate about plants and mushrooms (the regular kind, not the other ones, LOL). I'm just a teenager, so resources are limited, but I'm eager to learn! What are some hardy plants and flowers that could thrive in a small city garden? Also, are there any mushrooms that can be grown in a home setup? Any advice would be greatly appreciated – thanks in advance!

Check out your local county extension office – they have master gardeners who can answer your questions specific to your area. Don't worry about being young; they usually love to help anyone interested in gardening! You can call them, and they might ask for your contact info to follow up with advice. Plus, there are loads of free online resources! Look for the Pennsylvania State University site for current gardening practices in your area, so you can learn what works and what doesn’t. Happy digging!

Wow, that sounds super helpful! I didn’t even know about master gardeners. I’ll definitely look into it!

Since you’re working with limited space, consider starting a grow bag garden. It allows you to control moisture and soil quality easily. Just get a few grow bags and fill them with soil (trust me, you'll need a good amount!). Wait for sales at garden centers to stock up on soil and plants; you can usually find great deals in spring. Also, talk to your neighbors who garden – trading seeds and tips is a great way to learn! Good luck, and enjoy the process!

Great idea about the grow bags! I might try that too since my space is small!

First off, it's a good idea to measure your gardening space and check how much direct sunlight it gets. This will help you decide what plants to go with. Generally, full-sun plants need around 8 hours of sunlight, while partial sun ones need about 6, and shade plants can make do with 4 hours or less. Starting with this info will definitely guide you in choosing the right plants! Let me know if you have more questions! ?
