Getting Started with Hardwood for Woodworking Projects

Asked By CraftyJ3n_22 On

I'm transitioning from working with softwoods like cedar and construction lumber to hardwoods for projects like charcuterie and cutting boards. I find hardwood a bit daunting, especially with considerations like moisture content and the differences between air dried and kiln dried wood. Where can I find reliable resources or tips for working with hardwood before I dive in and start purchasing?

I've had luck at big box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's for hardwood, like oak and maple. You can often find slightly damaged pieces that are cheaper—perfect for practice! Look out for any bins of discounted wood at these stores!

Finding a local hardwood store is one of the best moves you can make. Most of them have scrap bins where you can grab offcuts for next to nothing, perfect for practicing with different wood types without breaking the bank. Plus, the staff there are usually super knowledgeable and can help you learn more about hardwoods! Seriously, don't let fear hold you back; just get started! Good luck!

I totally get that initial intimidation in a hardwood store! My first trip felt overwhelming, but I found a 'shorts' rack with plenty of smaller pieces just a few feet long. Perfect for cutting boards! Just remember that hardwood pricing is by board foot, so do some quick math to avoid sticker shock. It might not be as bad as you think!

YouTube is a goldmine for woodworking tutorials! Plus, sites like Woodcraft.com have loads of resources. Personally, I find hardwood easier to work with than softwood; don't sweat air dried vs. kiln dried too much—just keep an eye on moisture content if you're sourcing it from anywhere beyond a store. Check out some discount options, too!
