Hey everyone, I'm new here! I've been chatting with a lovely lady at my allotment, and I'd like to buy her a gift. She has some American heritage, and I thought about getting her an eggplant. However, since we're in the north of Scotland, I'm not sure if that's the best choice. What do you think? I have other ideas too, but I wanted to start with this one. Looking forward to your thoughts!

Good question! Before choosing an eggplant, you might want to consider if she enjoys aubergines and whether she has a greenhouse or cold frame to keep it warm. These plants can be quite picky about their growing conditions. Instead, you could opt for some unusual veg seeds that she can decide to grow herself. I recommend checking out Real Seeds or Incredible Vegetables for some interesting options!

I agree, gifting an aubergine can be tricky if she doesn’t have a greenhouse. I think your idea about seeds is better. Also, rhubarb is a classic British favorite that would thrive there. If she’s new to the UK, maybe a blackcurrant bush would be a fun choice too since they aren’t common in the States. As an ex-allotment holder, I would have loved something practical, like 12 bags of manure, haha!
