Grout vs Mortar for Brick Backsplash: What’s the Best Choice?

I'm planning to install Creative Mines Loft Paintgrade Brick, which is a thin brick veneer, as my backsplash for a kitchen project. I've got about 25 sqft to cover and am unsure about the best way to go about this. Should I stick with drywall for the installation, or is cement backer board a better choice? Also, I'm confused about whether I should use grout or mortar for the joints. Some say mortar is better to prevent cracking, while others mention grout for its workability. Since I'm painting over it, the color isn't an issue, but I really want to ensure I'm choosing the right materials to avoid future headaches.

Using drywall is totally fine for your backsplash! For adhering the bricks, you can use either mortar or mastic, but mortar might be a bit easier for 'grouting' the joints since it's cheaper and less likely to crack, especially if you're working with wider grout lines. Since you're planning to paint over it, the finish really shouldn't affect your choice too much!

That sounds great! Speaking of mortar, could you recommend a type that would work well for the joints? I'm about to head to the store and want to make sure I get the right stuff.
