Growing Succulents Outdoors in Coastal SC: Rain Challenges?

Asked By SunnySage92 On

Hey everyone! I've been tending to succulents for a while now, and I recently joined this community to learn from all of you. I live on the South Carolina coast, in zone 8 or possibly zone 9. I'm planning to move some of my succulents out onto my deck so they can soak up the full sun and heat. However, I'm a bit concerned about the daily pop-up showers we get here in the afternoons. Do any coastal succulent growers have tips on managing so much rain? I want to make sure my plants thrive in their new sunny spot!

I'm in Charleston and totally relate! Those daily summer showers can be a pain. I've used an umbrella, but I'm also thinking about making a simple plastic tent to cover my plants during the rain. Moving them in and out regularly just isn't practical!

I'm near Charlotte and deal with similar rain issues. I find myself moving my plants in and out due to the showers, which can get pretty annoying. If you're able, consider setting up an awning or some kind of cover to protect them when the rain hits. It's a hassle, but it saves a lot of stress.

As long as you use well-draining, gritty soil, your succulents should handle the rain just fine! They actually enjoy the occasional rain shower, as long as they aren't sitting in water afterward.
