Growing Wisteria in a Terrace: Tips and Tricks

Asked By SunnySideUp42 On

I'm looking to plant wisteria on the south-facing front of my terrace home. I'd love to have it climb up to provide summer shade and add some character. However, I'm a bit worried about the challenges: how can I prevent it from overshadowing my neighbors' facades? What's the best way to prune it if I can only access the first floor? Plus, how do I install a trellis up there? I'm also curious if the roots might damage the pavement, considering my front garden is pretty small. Any advice would be appreciated!

I've had wisteria on my Victorian semi for 15 years, growing in a similar setup. I initially put up a small trellis attached to the wall and then added some wires between the windows to train it upward. Pruning is essential to keep it contained—usually, I give it a good winter trim and then check on it at least three times during summer. I use a ladder for winter pruning, but for the summer touch-ups, I have extendable shears that work like a charm. The flowers are amazing and they really help keep the house cool by shading the front window! Just be patient; it takes a few years for the flowers to really bloom well.

Thanks for the tips! Those extendable shears sound perfect since I don’t have anyone to help me out. I guess I need to get some good winter pruning sorted and then I can manage the maintenance myself.
