Has Anyone Else Seen a Dismal Gardening Season This Year?

I'm located in Western NY, and I can't help but feel disappointed with this year's garden. Everything just seems so small and pathetic! My tomato plants are barely knee high and they've only just started blooming. My herbs are stuck and not growing at all. And my sweet potatoes? Let's not even get into that. I'm starting to wonder if my soil could be part of the problem since I didn't add any amendments this spring. Strange thing is, the Jerusalem artichokes on the other side of my property are only half the height they were last year too. I know I got everything in late, but that's usually the case for me. What's happening with everyone else's gardens?

You mentioned no amendments; that could be part of the issue. Are you keeping up with fertilizing and watering? Soil health is key! Sometimes just a good feeding or proper watering can really change the game.

From what I've seen, the weather has really thrown a wrench in things for many across the eastern US. We've had a cool and rainy start to the season, followed by some extreme heat. My tomatoes are just now starting to fruit, despite being pampered with good soil. It could really be a mix of those weather extremes that’s impacting growth this year. Hang in there!

Totally agree! The weather's been so rude this year!

I’m over in Long Island, and I can confirm it’s been a rough year for us too. My neighbors are also struggling with their gardens, so you’re definitely not alone in this! I finally have some ripe tomatoes, but everything was really slow to get started this year. It was a weird combination of a cold, wet spring followed by a scorching summer.

Definitely! If even the Jerusalem artichokes aren't thriving, it’s clear something’s off this season.
