Has Anyone Successfully Built a Collapsible Dog Crate?

Hey everyone! I'm toying with the idea of designing a retractable or collapsible dog crate for my two large dogs. My small house means limited space, and I'm inspired by a Murphy bed console table I saw. I envision side panels that fold out, a top that folds down, and a front piece that either has an accordion gate or attaches with slide bolts. I really don't want it to take up too much room when I have guests over, and I only need to collapse it a couple of times a month. If anyone's attempted something like this or has suggestions, I'd love to see your designs or ideas!

While your idea could work, I’d suggest considering the costs of wood and hinges. Most collapsible options out there might end up being more affordable and practical. I bought a travel crate that has been a lifesaver! It’s good for both home and outings, and it sounds like it might fit your needs without the hassle of DIY.

Yeah, but the charm of a custom build is totally worth it! If you have the materials already, why not go for it?

I think that sounds like a great project! While I haven’t made one, I believe it's doable. My tip? Start with pine; it’s cheaper and easier to work with. If things go wrong with your design, you won’t break the bank fixing it. Once you have a solid prototype, upgrade to nicer wood that matches your decor. You’ll already know exactly what you need to tweak!

Smart idea to use a cheaper wood first! I guess it’s like making a ‘muslin’ in sewing — you get to test things out!

I have to throw this out there — soft crates might be an option too! If your dogs are chill and don’t destroy, they fold away nicely and look way better than wire crates. Just a thought!

I agree, soft crates can be really convenient and more aesthetically pleasing!
