Has Anyone Tried Using Vaseline as a Wood Finish?

I've been working on rustproofing a screw in a piece of wood and accidentally spread some Vaseline around it. To my surprise, I actually like the finish it creates! It reminds me of how mineral oil looks. I'm curious why Vaseline isn't used more frequently as a wood finish compared to mineral oil, considering it seems to offer similar benefits and is easier to apply without the mess. Paste wax is recommended for extra protection and shine on oiled wood; so why not Vaseline?

Why not try some experiments yourself? You don't seem convinced by the reasons others give. Try it out on different items like picture frames or furniture to see how it works out for you! You might discover something new.

I think mineral oil doesn't dry and stays wet, which can be a problem since it might leach out onto clothes and surfaces. So, it's mainly for cutting boards or things that come into direct contact with food. Though Vaseline also doesn't dry, it's not edible, so it shares the downside without being food-safe. Paste wax is preferred because it solidifies and provides a durable finish.

Interesting point! I heard that the guy who invented Vaseline even ate a teaspoon of it daily, so technically, isn't it edible?

Not sure why people think mineral oil is a primary wood finish. It’s decent mixed with beeswax, but that's about it. Vaseline might work for outdoor items or things that won't be handled much, but for home decor, it might not be the best choice.

I've heard so many folks say they use mineral oil on tool handles, so it can't be all bad! Just curious why it's not more widely praised.

Petroleum jelly tends to be sticky and doesn’t dry out, which could attract dust and dirt. That might not be ideal for areas that get touched a lot.

Actually, I found that after applying it and wiping it in, it doesn’t feel sticky at all!
