I recently bought my dream home with my wife, but it comes with one major drawback: we have a carport instead of a garage. While our house has a basement and feels spacious, we've realized how beneficial a garage could be for storage and a potential workshop for woodworking. The carport isn't in the best shape either, with cracks in the concrete and some doubts about its sturdiness. I'm considering converting it into a garage, but I'm unsure about the costs and time involved. Has anyone else done this transformation? What was your experience?

If you're thinking about a garage, tearing down the carport might be the best route. The existing structure probably can't handle a new wall without significant support. Instead of trying to salvage it, you could start fresh with a new build right from the ground up. It's a solid investment, especially if you plan on using it for storage and your workshop.

That makes sense, especially since mine is built right up next to the house. I’ll have to make some code updates too, like removing a kitchen window that looks into the carport. But if I do replace it, doing it right sounds like the way to go.
