Help Choosing My First Hand Planes: Wood River or Other Options?

Hey folks! I've got around $600 in credit card points that I'm looking to spend on my first hand planes. I can't really go for used ones, but I can grab new planes from local blue or orange hardware stores, or the blue grocery store has Wood River available online. I'm thinking about picking up a #4, #5, and maybe a #6. If you were in my shoes, what would you choose? Any advice would be awesome!

With $600, I'd recommend checking out Veritas or Lie Nielsen planes if you can. The ones at the blue and orange stores aren't great for serious work. If you're limited to gift cards though, Wood River might be your best bet in this case!

If you're starting from scratch, I’d grab a #5. It’s versatile and once you get the hang of it, you might want to replace it later. You could also buy a second iron for different tasks! Plus, don't forget to check out the Wood River options, they are definitely better than the basic stuff at the hardware stores.

Thanks for the advice! I was surprised to see Wood River there. Sounds like a good option.

Before you decide, think about whether you have more time than money. Are you eager to spend time fine-tuning your tools, or just looking for something that works well right out of the box?

Good point! I've got the time, but I'm a bit nervous about tuning since I'm new to hand tool woodworking.
