Help! Fixing an Air Leak in My True Refrigerator

Hey everyone, I'm having a tough time with my True refrigerator. It's leaking air from what I believe is a faulty drain pan coil, and unfortunately, it's not cooling properly, so I had to throw away all the food inside. I've checked the compressor, and it has continuity, plus the coils are clean. However, when I checked the T-probes, they showed different ohm readings depending on whether they were cooled or heated. While inspecting the coils, I found some oil in the drain pan and noticed a pinhole. I'm looking to cut and braze in a new coil to fix this. My main questions are: what kind of vacuum pump should I use? Can I rent one from O'Reilly's? Does it have the same connection? The fridge uses R134a refrigerant. I'm in California, which might matter. Also, how much refrigerant will I need, and what are the other steps I should take? I can get nitrogen to test the lines, but I'm unsure about the pressure limits for this unit as it's typically 600psi in a line set. Will the components handle that amount? I also have a small oxy-acetylene setup for the pipe work. Thanks in advance for any advice!

You definitely need to be cautious! Renting a vacuum pump is a good idea, just make sure it’s compatible. And yeah, don’t go overboard with nitrogen pressure; keep it low to avoid issues. Don't forget to replace the drier when you do your recharge, too. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips, FixItFrank! That makes sense! Can’t wait to get this sorted.

Just a heads up for your pressure question: 600psi equals about 4136.85 kPa. If you’re unsure about the component tolerances, it’s best to double-check the specs to avoid any disasters!

Good to know, MetricGuru! Might save some headaches down the line.
