Help! How Can I Get Rid of Sprouting Acorn Seeds in My Garden?

Asked By G4rdenNinja87 On

I made a mistake by adding a bunch of acorn seeds to my garden bed, thinking they would decay and enrich the soil. Now they're sprouting, and I really need to know how to get rid of them before they take over! Any advice on effective ways to kill these seeds would be greatly appreciated!

If you want to kill those sprouts, just pull them out of the ground! It’s a straightforward way to deal with them, even if there are a lot of them. It might take some effort, but it’s effective!

Thanks for the tip! I think pulling them out is probably the way I’ll go.

In the future, think about boiling acorn seeds before adding them to your garden to prevent sprouting. If you germinate the seeds first and then heat the soil, that can also work. I like to set aside a patch and let them sprout, then use solarization after. That way, I can see if anything else sprouts after removing the cover, and then feel safe planting my actual crops there.

You could also try solarizing them! Just cover the area with clear plastic tarps (about 2-5mil thick). The sunlight will heat things up and kill off the acorn seeds, but make sure to consider your local climate for how long it’ll take to work.

Awesome, I live in a super hot area, so that should work well! I'm definitely going to give that a shot.
