Help! How Do I Fix Overpoured Epoxy on My Coffee Table?

Asked By WoodCrafter99 On

I'm trying my hand at making a live edge coffee table out of walnut, but I accidentally poured too much epoxy to fill in some low spots. Now, I have a lot of high spots on the surface. What's the best way to even this out? Should I just sand it aggressively? I've been searching for videos, but they all skip this part.

An oscillating sander could be your best bet here. Just avoid using a hand plane because it will dull quickly and you risk cracking the epoxy. Stick to power sanders for a smoother finish!

So, an oscillating sander is what I should go for? Got it!

It's a bit tough to give specific advice without seeing how much epoxy is over the wood, but if it's just a small layer, it might be manageable with sanding. You mentioned about 10% of the top has 1/16 to 1/8 inch excess? That's not too much, so you should be okay.

Yeah, that sounds about right. Thanks for the input!

A lot of folks send their large live edge tabletops to a mill shop to get them run through a big planer. If you’re planning to tackle it yourself, using a planer followed by sanding would probably be your best move. But just be careful with the amount of epoxy you have!

I heard planers and epoxy can be tricky. You think it is safe?
