I messed up big time and ordered two custom doors: a set of French doors and a sliding door. The problem is, I mistakenly ordered them at 78 inches tall instead of the necessary 96 inches. Now they look totally awkward in our home, and we can't keep them. I'm planning to visit Home Depot to see if I can talk to the manager about putting them on clearance to minimize my losses. Does anyone have suggestions on what options I have? Can I return them, and do I need to prepare for a restocking fee?

I would expect to pay a restocking fee for any return. Just curious, did Home Depot offer to measure for you before placing the order? For large projects like this, they typically do. If they didn't, that might be worth mentioning when you talk to the manager.
I faced a similar issue with Home Depot! They usually check measurements before orders, so I'm surprised that didn’t happen here. You should definitely ask about returns since if they’re standard size, undamaged, there's a chance, but since they are custom, it might be tricky.
Returning custom doors could be a hassle; often there's a restocking fee, and they might not accept them back at all. But if they're in good condition, you might have some luck. Have you thought about adding transom lights above the doors? That could help balance the height out in your space!
