Help! Is My Ceiling Sagging Due to Settling or Poor Installation?

Hey everyone! My wife and I moved into a house built around 1915 a few months ago, and we've only recently noticed that the ceiling in our living room is sagging in some areas and there are small cracks in the drywall. The floors in some of the upstairs rooms aren't perfectly level either; they have a slight slope. Above the sagging ceiling is a bathroom that the previous owners renovated, but I can't see any signs of water damage. We didn't catch these issues during the moving chaos and the birth of our son. I'm curious if this sagging could be due to the house settling or if it's more likely a sign of a structural issue? I'm ready to consult a structural engineer if necessary, but I'd love to hear your thoughts first!

From what you've described, it sounds like the sagging could be a result of poor drywall installation rather than structural issues or settling. It's common for drywall panels to sag if not enough screws were used in the installation. I'd recommend reaching out to a drywall company to take a look. Hopefully, they’ll just need to add some screws and do a bit of touch-up work!

I agree with the previous commenter! It doesn’t sound like you’re dealing with a major structural problem. It’s likely a former homeowner issue where they didn’t install the drywall properly. Definitely get a professional to check it out just in case, but I think you're on the right track!
