Help Me Choose the Right Budget Saw for Woodworking

I've been hand ripping boards to width for over a month, and it's really slowing down my projects. I really want to stick to hand tools, but I realize I need a power tool to keep things moving. I'm considering options for a saw that won't break the bank, ideally under $200. I've looked at table saws, circular saws, plunge saws, and others, but I'm overwhelmed with the choices and prices. I can't afford the high-end table saws that cost around $700, and the add-ons for different saws like tracks and stands make it complicated. I mostly work on outdoor furniture projects, and I'm trying to get clean cuts without resorting to shabby lumber. I'm looking for recommendations from anyone who's faced a similar dilemma: what saw have you found that meets your needs without a huge investment? I'm debating some cheap models from Harbor Freight or hunting for used tools on Facebook Marketplace, but I don't know what's worth it. Any advice would be really appreciated!

A good budget option could be a circular saw paired with a track guide. It's a solid solution for making straight cuts without needing to invest in a table saw right away. You can find portable options that are pretty good. I’ll also say that if you’re patient, sometimes local marketplaces have great deals on used table saws that might surprise you!

I’ve noticed sales on table saws at Home Depot too! Sometimes even the smaller ones can be reliable for outdoor projects.

And don’t forget, you can always build your tools up as you go. Starting cheaper with a circular saw is totally valid!

I’d suggest going for a bandsaw instead. It’s a great tool for ripping lumber quickly, and many woodworkers who like hand tools swear by them. You can find older models that won’t break your budget, and they’re usually easier to fix if something goes wrong.

Just faster for ripping. Plus, bandsaws take up less space compared to table saws. But you are right about maintenance being a concern!

Interesting take! What makes a bandsaw a better option for someone on a budget?

You can definitely make nice cuts with a circular saw. If you clamp a straight edge onto your board, that helps you guide the saw and keeps the cuts pretty straight. Plus, it's way cheaper than a table saw, and you can get a decent one from a store like Home Depot for under $200. I'd recommend something corded for better power.

Right, and if you want to get even more precise, just clean up the edges with your hand plane after you cut.

Exactly! And you don’t need a fancy setup. Just make sure to measure accurately and you can get really clean cuts. I’ve done it myself, just mark your cut line and follow it along the straight edge.
