I'm really struggling with my garden and could use some advice. I've tried growing a bunch of different plants including radishes, watermelon, and cucumbers, but the only things that grew were an onion that didn't produce anything, tiny potatoes that I was told were unsafe to eat, and tomatoes that looked great but never flowered or fruited. I've tried a variety of seeds from different places like Etsy, YouTube, and stores, but nothing seems to grow well. I even just tossed a bunch of seeds in the yard hoping something would happen, but the animals ended up eating them! I'm also dealing with a black walnut tree nearby that shades one part of my garden. For next year, I want to be better prepared. I'm curious about where to find reliable Heirloom seeds, what I might be doing wrong, and if it's worth it to invest in products like Miracle Grow or quality garden soil. Thanks in advance!

I think figuring out your soil is key; get a soil test to see what you’re working with. Knowing the pH and nutrient levels can change everything for your gardening success. Also, buying young plants instead of seeds can be a smart move, especially for crops like watermelon and cucumbers that need a good start. And don't forget about watering – ensure you're not under or overdoing it!
It sounds like soil might be where you're having trouble. Good soil is crucial for growing healthy plants! Try adding plenty of organic matter and consider starting your own compost. Keeping the soil covered with mulch or cover crops is a good idea too. And when it comes to seeds, check out local seed houses or master gardener groups; they can offer great advice and supply seeds that thrive in your area.
Your black walnut tree could be causing some issues. It releases a chemical called juglone that can harm other plants, especially ones like tomatoes and peppers. You’ll probably have better luck using raised beds or pots, well away from the tree. As for seeds, Etsy isn't the best bet; try trusted suppliers like Baker Creek or Seed Savers instead. And yes, some kind of fertilizer can really help your plants grow better!
