Help! My Cabot Wood Protector Made My Porch Slick After Rain

Asked By WoodWhisperer99 On

I applied Cabot Wood Protector Clear to my porch, following all the instructions, including sanding the wood. Unfortunately, just about six hours later, it rained unexpectedly (it was sunny and in the high 80s earlier!). Now my porch is super slick and doesn't seem water resistant at all. Even after a week, black-soled shoes are making marks on it. Should I re-sand and reapply the product, or is it time to look for another option altogether?

Sorry to hear about your porch troubles! That product does have a pretty bad rep. Honestly, there are better options out there. From my experience, you might need to re-sand it to remove that slick layer and then consider switching to a penetrating oil finish. They often do a much better job and are easier to maintain, plus they're more durable against the elements. Just remember to apply it correctly and wipe off any excess or you might end up right back where you started!

Thanks for the advice! Do you have any specific brands you recommend for penetrating finishes?

I can't help much with your porch situation, but I think you might be misunderstanding how weather works. Just because it was in the high 80s doesn't mean it wouldn't rain. It's always best to double-check forecasts before applying products, especially outdoors!
