Help! My Carpet Got Soaked from a Washing Machine Leak—What Should I Do?

Asked By CuriousCat99 On

So, my washing machine on the second floor leaked and the water ended up pooling on the surrounding carpet. The affected area is about 4-5 feet square, and I'm really worried about mold since it was pretty wet. I've been using towels to soak up as much water as I can, but I feel like I need to do more. This all happened around two hours ago, and while I want to keep costs down, I'm okay with spending some money if it means getting this sorted out. Any suggestions?

Try using a wet vacuum to get the majority of the moisture out, then set up a high-powered dehumidifier. If you don't have a wet vac, a carpet cleaner can work in a pinch. Just make sure to keep everything ventilated by opening windows or running fans directed at the soaked area!

Good call! And don’t forget to check underneath the carpet for dampness. You really want to make sure the padding isn’t soaked, too.

You could also consider pulling up the carpet and getting rid of any wet padding underneath—it's pretty much like a sponge so if it’s soaked, it will just hold moisture. Renting a wet vac and dehumidifier is definitely worth it, plus they should help a lot!

You really want to jump on this before mold sets in. First off, you should use fans and a dehumidifier to help pull moisture out of the air. If you can rent a carpet cleaning machine, that can really help suck out a lot of water too. Make sure you’re working to get airflow going as much as possible!

Definitely! Plus, if you lift the carpet at the edges where it's wet, it can help with drying. Just be careful during that process!
